Announcing Marriott’s New Agreement with Expedia Group - Sept 2023

Announcing Marriott’s New Agreement with Expedia Group - Sept 2023

Marriott International has signed a new, multi-year agreement with Expedia Group. The agreement continues Marriott’s long-standing distribution arrangement with Expedia Group for transient bookings.

Under the new agreement, Marriott and Expedia Group have reached mutually beneficial terms that advance each company’s strategic objectives while achieving more favorable economics for Marriott hotels than the current agreement. Components of the agreement include:
  1. Improved economic terms – full details on MGS.
  2. Continuation of the existing EPS arrangements, including bi-annual strategic opportunity payments. We will continue to leverage Expedia Partner Solutions as the exclusive global optimized distributor of Marriott’s Wholesale rates, availability, and content. Since launch in October 2019, hotels have benefitted from significant cost savings, operational efficiencies, and industry-leading rate parity against third-party channels that sell Marriott hotel inventory.
  3. Expansion of optional Expedia targeted marketing products available to hotels. A Marriott approved, centrally monitored version of the Expedia Accelerator program will be made available in Q4 2023 as another option to boost hotel visibility along with the existing Expedia TravelAds program. Marriott’s central controls and oversight will ensure compliance with our distribution strategy, while allowing us to monitor the program’s effectiveness. Full details and guidance about how the Expedia Accelerator will be administered will be available later in Q4.
  4. Existing arrangements with Hotwire and Vacations by Marriott will continue. Hotels will continue to be able to participate in Hotwire, Expedia’s opaque booking channel that is designed to help hotels drive sales of distressed inventory within clearly defined central revenue management controls. Marriott will also continue to leverage Expedia’s technology to run www.vacationsbymarriott.com, Marriott’s leisure packaging platform, that allows consumers to book travel packages including hotel, air, car, local transportation, and attractions.
Consistent with our strategy for all Expedia bookings, Marriott-branded hotels continue to have the ability to:
  1. Control Access to Rooms and Inventory: Hotels maintain full control of the rooms and inventory they make available to Expedia and are not required to offer the same rooms and inventory to Expedia as compared to Marriott Direct Channels.
  2. Differentiate Direct Channels: We continue to have the right to differentiate Marriott Direct Channels with member benefits, rates, and offers.
More details about the Expedia agreement can be found on MGS. Additionally, this information will be shared with hotels globally via their upcoming edition of the Weekly Update.

One of our highest priorities is the strength of our Direct Channels and the resulting long-term profitability of your hotels. Thank you for your support of Marriott’s distribution strategy.

Thank you,
Matt Cameron
Vice President, Global Distribution
